Registered Nurse III

The Registered Nurse II (RN) will provide professional nursing services for consumers, assist with laboratory, EKGs and other medical treatments, psychosocials, make assignments to LVN and unlicensed staff, maintain pharmaceutical oversight of medication samples, and complete associated documentation for the consumer and program and must be capable of providing psychiatric emergency services.

The IDD position, which is based in Converse, requires a RN to oversee the host home providers or group home consumers with their medical needs. Each consumer must have a yearly nursing assessment and the group home staff, host home providers, and day program staff must contact the in house RN or on call RN to dispense PRN medications. The RN will complete quarterly assessments for all host home providers. The RN must work with outside providers and pharmacies for continuity of care. This position requires some visits to the consumerís homes. The RN will be required to delegate tasks to unlicensed group home and day program staff. There is also an on-call requirement that is rotated with all other RNs. If a consumer is released from the hospital they must be seen within twenty four (24) hours of discharge or being informed of discharge. The on-call nurse will also triage all consumer issues and may need to assess consumers at their homes. This is a self-motivated position and requires independent critical thinking. On-call pay and mileage is provided.


  1. Provide professional goal directed nursing care to individuals by performing nursing assessments regarding the health status of the client, completing nursing diagnosis, developing a plan of care, evaluating consumer's responses to nursing interventions 
  2. Assist with laboratory collection, EKGs, and other medical treatments/interventions appropriately, taking initial health history on new patients, using database to augment plan of care, and assess nursing needs to provide safe and efficient nursing care 
  3. Provide comprehensive nursing care for acutely and/or critically ill patients whose conditions warrant expert and complicated treatment 
  4. Make nursing care assignments to LVN and unlicensed observation staff of various skill levels, instructing and supervising staff as needed 
  5. Participate in multi-disciplinary quality assurance program to evaluate and ensure staff proficiency, quality of patient care, environmental safety, and comprehensive documentation 
  6. Aid in the Utilization Management function as needed by collecting, reviewing, and authorizing Medicaid and non-Medicaid covered emergency Mental Health hospitalization for consumers throughout the Center's system 
  7. Maintain pharmaceutical oversight of medication samples for specified units participating in the program through assigned unit level staff, maintaining accurate account of stock medications, ,controlled substances, and consumer medications 
  8. Coordinate medication distribution with the Center's pharmacy contract, and coordinates services with pharmacy representatives and/or companies 
  9. Other duties as assigned



  1. Bachelorís Degree in Nursing
  2. Associates degree in nursing with two (2) yearsí experience in MH services can substitute for bachelorís degree requirement
  3. Current Registered Nurse Certification to practice in the State of Texas 
  4. Four (4) years of nursing experience, with at least one year in psychiatric, mental retardation, or substance abuse setting, and one year in administrative nursing 
  5. Knows and conforms to the Texas Nurse II Practice Act and the Board's rules and regulations as well as all Federal, State, and local laws, rules, or regulations affecting the RN's current area of nursing practice 
  6. Obtains required continuing nursing education to maintain licensure        
  7. Knowledge of pharmaceutical/community resources, and psychiatric medications           
  8. Ability to understand behavior of individuals experience psychiatric decompensation, responses to medications, to observe, record, and report behavior of individuals and unusual responses to therapy
  9. Ability to use computer software to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and system databases
  10. Must maintain required credentials and mandatory training requirements to ensure compliance with all State regulations and CHCS policies
  11. Must maintain a valid driverís license and automobile insurance coverage, be able to travel as needed, and be able to meet on a consistent basis the driving record requirements of the Companyís auto insurance carrier if you drive your vehicle during company business 
  12. Must be able to meet the physical requirements to complete SAMA and CPR training including lifting up to 12 lbs. and supporting up to 55 lbs.; bending, stooping and getting on and off the floor without assistance.
  13. Must have adequate mobility that requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (vertical and horizontal), using fingers, hands, feet, legs and torso in various care. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to occasionally transfer a consumer.
