Chief Development Officer

Department: 5001 - Development
Location: San Antonio, TX
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM


This position reports to the Vice President of External Relations and will be responsible for developing and sustaining a robust annual giving program centered on unrestricted and restricted gifts from a variety of private sector resources including individuals, corporations and foundations, The Center For Health Care Services (CHCS) leadership team, board, and staff.


Prospect Identification, Cultivation and Solicitation

  1. Develop, implement, direct and evaluate the CHCS Foundationís annual giving program, including identification and solicitation of lapsed and current donors, direct mail, solicit new prospects, retain and upgrade current donors, and increase giving participation rates and totals
  2. Identify and facilitate the cultivation/solicitation of major annual gift prospects in coordination with the Executive Leadership Team
  3. Foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization 
  4. Assure that the organizationís corporate culture, systems and procedures support fund development and vice verse

 Development Program

  1. Collaborate with members of the Leadership Team to identify fundable initiatives of interest to donors, grantors, and sponsors
  2. Develop, implement and evaluate resource development strategies and opportunities, keep abreast of current trends, and offer new ideas to achieve goals
  3. Ensure CHCS Foundation sponsored activities are planned and leveraged in ways that capture data and information needed for current and future development activities


Staff and Volunteer Planning

  1. Lead staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization 
  2. Plan, focus and facilitate the fundraising work of CHCS Foundation, the CHCS Foundationís Board of Directors and the CHCS Board of Trustees
  3. Grow the number of fundraising volunteers; recruit, train, direct, supervise and staff these volunteers

 Corporate and Foundation Relations

  1. Research and identify potential corporate and foundation grant and sponsor prospects, oversee grant writing and the submission of grants
  2. Assist Foundation to build, strengthen and leverage relationships with corporate and foundation funders (executives and program officers)

 Recognition and Stewardship

  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive donor recognition/stewardship program designed to thank and recognize annual giving donors, lifetime major giving donors and grantors/sponsors
  2. Inform and follow-up with all CHCS staff members and supervisors to ensure that major gift, grant and sponsor relationship management needs are addressed appropriately


  1. Meet fundraising revenue goals
  2. Contribute to the overall success of the CHCS Foundation plan
  3. Ability to work irregular schedules, including evening and/or weekend hours
  4. Other duties as assigned



 The required skills and experience for this position include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  1. Bachelorís degree in marketing, business, communications, public relations, journalism, English or an equivalent degree program
  2. Minimum of 5-7 yearsí experience with a proven track record of success in achieving revenue goals in the private sector (Individuals/Corporate/Foundation/Special Events)
  3. Certified Fund Raising Professional (CFRE) designation required  
  4. Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program and producing charitable contributions  
  5. Proven ability to work closely with executive leadership in annual planning, budgeting and goal setting
  6. Oversee the measurement and tracking of progress against the departmentís budget and goals
  7. Broad development knowledge and understanding of moves management and stewardship
  8. Demonstrated proficiency in prospect research and donor database applications
  9. Sound understanding of and responsiveness to prospect and donor needs and interests
  10. Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems, make decisions and execute plans, start to finish
  11. Proven communication and interpersonal skills with ability to establish and build positive working relationships with prospects, donors, colleagues, and volunteers
  12. Experience in goal setting and working with a team to meet key goals
  13. Knowledge of engagement strategies and practices; ability to guide and mentor staff to develop and deploy engagement initiatives
  14. Ability to anticipate needs, initiate planning, follow through, and work with minimal direction and supervision
  15. Ability to travel as needed (approximately 10%, primarily within the Bexar County area)
  16. Must maintain required credentials and mandatory training requirements to ensure compliance with all State regulations and CHCS policies 
  17. Must maintain a valid driverís license and automobile insurance coverage, be able to travel as needed, and be able to meet on a consistent basis the driving record requirements of the Companyís auto insurance carrier 
  18. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 12 pounds and occasionally must support and/or move up to 25 pounds.


  1.  Master's degree in business, marketing, public relations, healthcare administration or related field
  2. Ten yearsí (10) experience with a proven track record of success in achieving revenue goals of two million ($2 million) or more in the private sector (Individuals/Corporate/Foundation/Special Events) 
  3. Familiarity with 501(c)(3) not-for-profits and health-related organizations
  4. Experience with E-Tapestry donor database
