Peer Support Specialist - CCBHC

Department: 4000 - CCBHC
Location: San Antonio, TX
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM (varies)

PURPOSE 

The Peer Support Specialist uses their lived experience of recovery from mental health or substance use disorders, plus skills learned in formal training, to deliver trauma-informed services in behavioral health settings to promote recovery and resiliency.


TASKS

  1. Under supervision and as part of a support team, provide peer-to-peer services to consumers, assisting them to achieve their recovery goals 
  2. Arrange recovery support services per the recovery plan, identfiy and address barriers to recovery, and foster recovery assets 
  3. Assist consumers with linking to appropriate internal and external services (housing/employment/independent living, etc.), and navigating systems essential to recovery and growth 
  4. Establish and develop appropriate consumer relationships of trust, hope and empowerment by sharing own lived experiences to facilitate achievement of consumersí recovery goals; provide community outreach 
  5. Provide peer bridge services to assist individuals transitioning between residential or inpatient settings to the community 
  6. Ensure clinical documentation is submitted in accordance with Center standards and meets all designated requirements.
  7. Position requires travel within Bexar County to meet the need (s) of the consumer(s).
  8.  Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Be able to become a certified peer within one year of employment by utilizing resources and support by CHCS.
  3. Self-identified as having direct personal experience living with mental illness and/or substance use recovery, with a primary diagnosis of mental illness or dual diagnosis or parent or primary care giver of a child with special needs and/or social, emotional, or behavioral challenges; experience in navigating systems to obtain services for their child/family;  
  4. One (1) year of experience working on recovery and able to manage own wellness
  5. Agree to disclose own mental illness or substance use diagnosis for the purpose of educating, role modeling and providing hope to others about the reality of recovery
  6. Able to provide advocacy with a non-judgmental approach to working with families
  7. Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office programs and systems databases
  8. Good organizational/planning and time management skills
  9. Strong professional verbal and written skills
  10. Must maintain required credentials and mandatory training requirements to ensure compliance with all State regulations and CHCS policies
  11. Must maintain a valid driverís license and automobile insurance coverage, be able to travel as needed, and be able to meet on a consistent basis the driving record requirements of the Companyís auto insurance carrier if you drive your vehicle during company business 
  12. Must be able to meet the physical requirements to complete SAMA and CPR training including lifting up to 12 lbs. and supporting up to 55 lbs.; bending, stooping and getting on and off the floor without assistance.
  13. Must have adequate mobility that requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (vertical and horizontal), and using fingers, hands, feet, legs and torso in various care. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to occasionally transfer a consumer.

 PREFERRED 

  1. CPS (Certified Peer Specialist) certification
  2. Experience working in an organization providing mental health, and/or substance use services
  3. Experience with or knowledge of well-ness oriented trauma-informed care
  4. Strong professional verbal and written communication skills
  5. Bilingual (English/Spanish)
